Tablet coating in the drum

The oldest method that exists for coating and finishing pharmaceutical products is particularly effective when it comes to coating large particles that are not compatible with a fluidised bed, such as tablets, capsules or very large pellets.

Basic principle
Inside a slowly-turning drum, the coating fluid is sprayed onto the product surface and simultaneously dried with warm air injected in a continuous current. A slight negative pressure inside the drum ensures a continuous current whilst also preventing the product from falling out of the drum and into the working area during the coating process. A fully homogeneous application and a complete surface seal can be guaranteed with drum coating.

What is most important here is the homogeneous and reproducible spray that delivers optimal droplet size and distribution, as well as low speeds on the coating bed. The resulting highly even coating allows for a high degree of efficiency that can be achieved independent of the tablet's size or shape.

The coating substance is an element of the coating fluid and is sprayed onto the product particles evenly in fine droplets. During this process, the droplets wet the particle and blend together on its surface. The liquid content evaporates and the coating material hardens. This process is repeated during spraying. Once all the liquid has evaporated, the particle is left with a finished coating.

Spray nozzles for tablet coating in research and development departments

In order to develop correct tablet coatings, until just a few years ago, pharmaceutical companies had to use coating drums, which wasted too many tablets in the test phase. Once the manufacturers of the coaters started to build more efficient tabletop units for research purposes, it was also clear to Düsen-Schlick that it would have to optimise its spray nozzles for these drum sizes.

More operational safety in tablet coating

In the pharmaceutical industry, flat spray two-substance nozzles are used in coating drums for the coating of pharmaceutical products. If possible, the coating process should not be interrupted for economical reasons. In addition to the geometry of the coater, the drying air and the spraying liquid, the nozzles play a particularly important role in this process. A new nozzle with an antibearding cap (ABC-Technology®) meets the requirement for operating security and improved handling during coating.

New coating arm for tablet coater

In tablet production, coating processes require a lot of manual operation and experience: The spray arms and nozzles that are used have to be constantly checked, and the spraying process variables require careful adjustment. A new nozzle and spray arm concept now allows you to achieve considerably more efficient processes.

    Perfect atomisation without bearding

Anti-bearding air cap ensures that droplets are well distributed, and that coating and moistening are homogenous. The type of nozzle used for coating and moistening determines the process result. Normally, flat spray two-substance nozzles are used for this process. A new, robust air cap withstands even the most adverse operating conditions and thus ensures a clean spraying process with the ideal drop size.

New nozzle technology ensures better efficiency in tablet coating

Time and again conventional spray arms cause trouble when coating tablets. They are often difficult to clean and are not easy to inspect. The result is a disruption to the process flow and unnecessarily long set-up times. A new spray arm concept promises to improve this situation.
